*This week's Upstart…Bush - "The People That We Love" (Atlantic Records)* It never seems to be the right time for Bush. They release two dark rock albums, but are dismissed by the British press for "sounding too like Nirvana". They release a third pro-tools-oriented album; get slated again for using samplers "too late". What can you do? Well, you can release a single that combines luscious grinding grunge chords with squealing guitar solos. Written while standing on their heads, but listening to this they're firmly screwed on. (RB) 4/5 *Eddy Grant - "Walking on Sunshine (StarGate Mix)" (Ice Records)* The follow up to `Electric Avenue', grows on you like a cyst but don't be fooled. The ubiquitous voice distorter, to modernise `past it' artists, is cynically used throughout, as repetitive mundane lyrics ("You're mine you're mine, you're…. Walking on sunshine") feast on your soul, all disguised as a dance track. Frankly, you'd find more fun catching syphilis- apt, as you should avoid both at all costs. Beer mat anyone? (KC) 1/5 Gorillaz - "Rock the House!" (EMI) This is yet another plainly average release from those 2D friends of ours. It is quite a laid back tune and the lyrics even give advice on how to dance. What more could anyone possibly want? But really this is just the same as all other Gorillaz releases, nothing great, but nothing not to like, and guaranteed to make some cartoon characters very rich. They can't spend it you know.(NW) 3/5 Delta - "Could You" (Mercury) No matter how chaotic and downright baffling a live performance from this lot might be, it appears that, once suitably restrained by the producer's harnesses, they convert pretty damn well to the studio. Hence this delightful little tune, perfect to bliss out to on those forthcoming winter nights. If only everything from Birmingham made this much sense. 4/5 (IP) Zero 7 - "In The Waiting Line" (Ultimate Dilemma) 3/5 The `Seven were set for life since their first release was a remix of Radiohead's "Climbing Up The Walls". In the meantime, their debut album "Simple Things" has charmed the legs off a thousand designer coffee tables and this is as good a cut as any from it, helped along, ironically enough, by a sublime remix by drum'n'bass guru Richard Dorfmeister. (SP) *This week's Upchuck… David Kitt - "You Know What I Want To Know" (Blanco Y Negro) 1/5* Do you know what WE want to know? When is this shit gonna end? That's what. Yeah, it's soporifically lovely an'all, but ferchrissake have a new idea in your wet indie life. The Kittster does the blurred focus cover photo and ambling groove as well as the next man, it's just he's stood in an arena full of the fuckers who ALL SOUND THE SAME. Open your eyes, burn with inspiration, and then release it - don't compromise my ears with this mediocre crap any longer. (SP)
